Hi There!

I’m Julia and I’m so happy you are here.
Cabbage & Cake is my new baby and I’m the writer, creative, chef and photographer behind the scenes. But most of all, I am an artist at heart, and I think there’s something magical about baking and cooking from scratch.

Growing up in a small town in Bavaria, the south of Germany I was surrounded by the beauty of nature and lots of delicious, traditional and homemade food.

Since I was a little girl, I’ve had a deep love for nature and always felt a strong connection to plants, the changing of the seasons and the earth.

After some adventurous and crazy years of studying, working and travelling - I’m a trained chef by trade among other things- all over the world in my twenties, I’ve settled down in Canada, where I’ve lived with my husband and kids for the past ten years.

Living in multicultural Toronto has broadened my culinary horizon even more and I love going out and exploring new food but once in a while, I really crave an easy German cake, not too sweet and made with just a handful of ingredients, just like my Oma made every weekend since I can remember.

My life has become a lot more grounded over the last decade living in the same place for years and being a stay-at-home Mom to my wonderful children, which really helped me nurture and honour my sensitive nature.

My husband shares my passion for real and good food, and we love to gather and share it with our friends and family. He and I are dreaming of a homestead where we grow and farm our own food.

Until then, we will plant every inch of our little backyard in the city with herbs, veggies, berries and beautiful flowers.

When I am not tending to plants or cooking and baking in the kitchen, I love to spend time barefoot in nature noticing all the pretty little things around me, reading a good book and listening to some of my favourite tunes.

I love making things with my hands and adding beauty to my everyday life, be it with a delicious cake on my table or a stunning wreath on my wall and I am so excited to share all of that with you!
