NATURAL CACAO BUTTER LIP BALM
Once again, its fall and I can’t get enough of the stunning colors of changing leaves, all the brilliant yellows, golds, vibrant reds and oranges! Since living in Canada fall has definitely become my favourite season. However, as the days get shorter and cooler and as soon as the heat gets turned on inside my lips start to get dry and cracked.
This cacao butter lip balm comes to my rescue year after year! It keeps my lips super soft and moisturized, has a pleasant slightly chocolatey smell from the use of natural cacao butter and adds just the right amount of shine to my lips.
I love that I can control and pronounce all the ingredients and can source natural and organic ones free from potentially harmful additives, all while saving on waste and money.
It is easy and quickly made by melting beeswax with natural cacao butter, sunflower oil and lanolin and adding in Vitamin E oil. No fancy equipment required, you can use your kitchen scale and utensils.
The cacao butter lip balm DIY is also a great project to do with children, just make sure to be careful around the stove. This recipe is actually one my husband and daughter started making every year in the fall and it is well loved by family and friends.
These natural lip balms make great gifts for the holidays, just write or stamp add a little tag and a nice bow!
TIPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT CACAO BUTTER LIP BALM
You can either use beeswax pellets or a block. If you use a beeswax block you will need a sharp knife to coarsely chop it up. I prefer to use beeswax pellets since they are a bit easier to weigh and melt faster.
Cacao butter comes in two different types as well. You can use both, either deodorized or natural/ non-deodorized cacao butter. I prefer to use natural cacao butter for this recipe since I love the natural chocolate aroma and flavour.
How to avoid a heat tunnel? Sometimes the lip balm can get a small hole on top, called a heat tunnel. To avoid these, you can fill the lip balm tubes about ¾ at first, let them cool down and then fill them all the way up with more melted mixture to get an even finish.
If you wonder how to best package your homemade cacao butter lip balm, I recommend pouring your mixture into lip balm tubes instead of tins. This cacao butter is a rather hard lip balm and could be a little challenging to be picked up with your fingers. You can buy empty lip balm tubes made from different materials like food-grade plastic or paper in bulk, depending on how many you would like to make.
I like to always carry a cacao butter lip balm in my purse. It comes in handy not only for dry lips, but I’ve applied it to dry cuticles or dry skin on my hands as well.
