BRING IN SPRING WITH HYACINTHS
Hyacinths are fragrant, bulbous, spring blooming perennials that originated from the Eastern Mediterranean region and are now grown worldwide in temperate zones for their sweet scent and vibrant colours. They come in an array of beautiful colours, like blues, purples, pinks, reds, oranges, apricots, yellows and whites.
Hyacinths are one of my favourite spring plants and I absolutely love their bold colours and strong scent. Bringing them into my house feels like bringing in a piece of spring into my space that lifts my spirits when the winter feels like it will never end.
In this blogpost I will show you how to display some beautiful hyacinths into repurposed dishes I found at the thrift store. Whenever I have a bit of time to spare, I love going to my local antique and thrift stores. There’s something really exciting about it, and you never know, if you will find a great piece.
Maybe you already have some dishes, you could use as a planter for this project or you can take a trip to your closest thrift store, find something unique and turn someone’s junk into your treasure.
TIPS ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR HYACINTHS
Keep your hyacinths in a cool, bright spot out of direct sunlight and away from fireplaces. The cooler the room is the longer they will last.
Water your hyacinths moderately and avoid over watering.
To avoid your hyacinth flower spikes from leaning too much to one side, you can rotate them regularly.
Wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs and wash your hands thoroughly to avoid skin irritations.
Add some small rocks to the bottom of your planters to improve drainage and avoid root rot.
Instead of tossing your hyacinth bulbs like a bouquet, I like to plant them in my backyard after they are done blooming and they will come back next year in spring, adding a great pop of colour into my raised beds.
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED
hyacinths
dishes like teacups, soup dishes, bowls
potting soil
small rocks
moss
newspaper or crafts mat
gloves
INSTRUCTIONS
Cover your work surface and gather all your materials.
Water your hyacinths before planting them.
Add a layer of small rocks to the bottom of your planter.
Fill up your planter with 2/3 of potting soil.
Remove the hyacinths from their pots and plant them in the middle of your prepared container. Arranging them in odd numbers and rather close together looks best.
Add soil around the bulbs to fill up your planter, pressing down slightly.
Cover the soil with moss and clean your dishes up nicely.
Find the perfect spot for your new planters and enjoy your freshly planted hyacinths!
