DIY PURPLE CABBAGE VASE
A red cabbage can be quickly turned into a beautiful vase to display your favourite flowering branch, like these stunning magnolia blooms.
Have you also wondered why red cabbage is not called purple cabbage since it looks rather purple? Did you know that it changes its colour depending on the pH value of the soil it’s grown in? The more acidic the soil is, the redder it will be and in more neutral soil it will grow more purple. This is why in cooking when you add some acidity like vinegar or lemon juice to your cabbage it will turn red and when you cook it, it will turn blue.
Besides cooking or enjoying this stunning and nutrient dense vegetable raw, you can also use it to create a beautiful centrepiece with a pretty purple cabbage vase for your favourite flowers. I like using edible and natural decorations and reusing or thrifting things instead of buying new ones. A while ago I found some glass test tubes in a thrift store and thought they could be great to use as small vases in a DIY project like this purple cabbage vase.
You can use different kinds of cabbages depending on the colours of your table scape. I love the deep purple of red cabbage and find the layers of white and purple shades so pretty. I wanted to display a magenta flowering branch of our magnolia tree and using a small glass tube works out great for this, but you could also cut a bigger hole into the cabbage and use a bigger jar or small vase to display a bouquet of your favourite flowers.

TIPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT
DIY PURPLE CABBAGE VASE
Pick a big and firm cabbage head of your choice. Red, white or savoy cabbages will work well for this project.
Make sure to cut the bottom of your cabbage nice and straight so your cabbage vase will sit level on the table. You want it to be sitting nice and steady to avoid it from wobbling or rolling over.
Choose a beautiful flowering branch or flowers that will go nicely with your cabbage. To display a bigger bouquet of flowers you will have to cut a hole big enough to fit in a small jar or vase.
You can wear gloves to prevent the cabbage from staining your hands.
Have fun making this DIY project and enjoy the creative process.
