DIY WHIPPED BODY BUTTER

This DIY whipped body butter recipe is easy and simple and creates a light body butter that feels and smells amazing while still deeply hydrating due to the use of shea butter, cocoa butter and sweet almond oil. A bit of arrowroot powder creates a non-greasy lotion and rose and sandalwood essential oils give it a lovely romantic scent.

After gifting and using up all my deeply nourishing DIY CHOCOLATE ORANGE LOTION BARs, I’ve been testing recipes for whipped body butters to create something lighter for the spring and summer. I wanted to make a cream without using citrus essential oils this time, since I love going into the sun (citrus essential oils make the skin more sensitive to sunlight), but still rich and moisturizing with a beautiful scent.

You can control and pronounce all the ingredients of this nourishing whipped body butter. And you can source natural and organic ones, free from potentially harmful additives and synthetic fragrances, all while saving money and plastic waste.

Make this easy recipe for whipped body butter with only six ingredients and use your kitchen scale and utensils (no fancy equipment needed!) and enjoy super soft and pleasantly smelling skin from tip to toe.

Whipped body butters also make a great homemade gift for Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day. Just add a little handwritten tag and a pretty bow - homemade gifts made with love are always the best to give!

TIPS TO MAKE THE
PERFECT DIY WHIPPED BODY BUTTER

Measure your ingredients by weight using a kitchen scale, rather than in cups, for best results.

Make sure to use essential oils that are safe for skin and properly dilute it, by mixing it into the body butter base after it has completely melted and cooled. An essential oil dilution rate between 0.5%- 2% (very subtle to stronger scent strength) of the total weight is recommended for body use. Adding too much can cause skin irritations.

You can buy refined or unrefined shea butter. Refined shea butter has a neutral scent and a longer shelf life, but if you like the strong nutty scent and the maximal nutrient content of unrefined shea butter, you can use that as well.

Cocoa butter comes in two different types as well. You can use both, either deodorized or natural/ non-deodorized cocoa butter. I prefer using natural cocoa butter for this recipe because I love the natural chocolate scent.

Make sure to cool your body butter base sufficiently before whipping it. It should have a semi-solid texture, look opaque with a skin building on top, and still be soft to the touch.

Whip your body butter mixture until it’s light and fluffy like frosting for a cake and avoid over mixing.

Enjoy the creative process of making whipped body butters and get creative with different essential oils, depending on the season.

INGREDIENTS

Shea butter -I prefer using unrefined shea butter for its health benefits, but some people don’t like the smell of unrefined shea butter, and you can use whichever one you prefer.

Cocoa butter - I like using natural cocoa butter better than deodorized because I love the chocolatey scent, but you can use both types.

Sweet almond oil - This oil is light weight and non-greasy and can be substituted with jojoba oil.

Arrowroot powder -Using arrowroot powder is optional, but it acts as a mattifying agent and creates a non-greasy body butter.

Vitamin E-oil - This oil helps extend shelf life by preventing the oils from oxidizing and going rancid.

Essential oils - I used rose and sandalwood essential oils for this DIY recipe which pair nicely with the small of the natural cocoa butter.
