CHOCOLATE COVERED WAFFLE POPS

These waffle pops are an adorable treat to make with your loved ones on Valentine’s Day and a lovely idea for parties, brunch or dessert. It’s an easy recipe, made with a mini waffle maker and a great one to make with kids.

Kids as well as adults will love to decorate them individually with melted chocolate and their preferred colourful sprinkles, coconut flakes, slivered almonds, crushed nuts or pistachios. This could even be a cute party idea to make a waffle bar with all different kinds of toppings.

My family loves to make waffles for a weekend breakfast, served with fresh berries, maple syrup and homemade whipped cream. But these heart-shaped waffle pops covered in chocolate and sprinkles and nuts are definitely a step up from our regular Sunday waffles and a special treat for a special occasion.

Heat up your waffle maker, whip up some fluffy waffle batter, bake up some adorable heart-shaped waffle pops, and have fun decorating them with your favourite toppings!

TIPS TO MAKE THE PERFECT CHOCOLATE COVERED WAFFLE POPS

Use a kitchen scale if you can to weigh your ingredients rather than measuring them in cups. This will ensure accurate ingredients and will result in a great product.

If you don’t have access to vanilla sugar you can follow my recipe to make homemade vanilla sugar or substitute with granulated sugar and pure vanilla extract.

Make sure to gently fold in the whipped egg whites into your batter. This will make them extra fluffy.

Don’t over mix the batter to avoid the waffles from getting too tough or rubbery.

Fully heat your waffle maker before adding your batter and aim for a crisp waffle texture. Waffles that are too soft won’t hold the popsicle stick properly. Also, avoid opening the waffle maker before the light signals the waffles are done.

Insert the lollipop sticks right away, when the waffles are still warm.

Let your waffles cool down on a wire cooling rack before you decorate them.

Decorate with sprinkles or nuts immediately after you cover the waffles in chocolate and before the chocolate starts to harden.

INGREDIENTS

for the waffle batter:

125 g flour
1 tbsp Vanilla sugar or 1 tbsp sugar + 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 large egg
250 ml milk or oat milk
30 g unsalted butter, melted
1/2 tsp cinnamon

for the waffle pop coating:

200 g semisweet chocolate chips
1 tsp coconut oil

for decorating:

sprinkles, sliced almonds, coconut flakes, crushed nuts or pistachios
popsicle or lollipop sticks

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED

hand mixer
whisk
rubber spatula
mini waffle maker
double boiler or microwave
wire cooling rack

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat your waffle maker.

In a medium bowl mix together flour, vanilla sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.

Separate the egg.

Whip the egg white with a hand mixer until stiff peaks are forming.

Whisk the egg yolk with milk and the melted butter.

Add into the dry ingredients and mix until just incorporated.

With a rubber spatula gently fold the whipped egg white into the batter.

Make waffles according to your waffle makers instructions. They should be golden brown on both sides and still soft and fluffy in the middle. My mini heart waffle maker needs 2 tbsps. of batter for each waffle.

Insert the lollipop sticks right away, when the waffles are still warm.

Let your waffles cool down on a wire rack before decorating them.

Melt your chocolate and coconut oil in a double boiler or a bowl in the microwave and stir to combine.

Coat half of your waffles with the melted chocolate and set on a wire rack or parchment paper to dry.

Decorate with sprinkles or nuts when chocolate is still wet and let dry completely for 10-15 minutes.

Have fun decorating your heart-shaped waffle pops with chocolate and toppings of your choice and enjoy devouring them with your loved ones!
